Celebrating Black History Month: Keith Ellis Shines a Light Around the World ๐ŸŒ

This Black History Month, Winrock International https://winrock.org/

is celebrating Keith Ellis, a Winrock volunteer whose life and work reflect the resilience of the Black diaspora and the transformative power of service. Keithโ€™s story reminds us of the strength that comes from community, history, and a commitment to making a difference.

A Journey of Resilience

As a graduate of North Carolina A&T in Agricultural Education and Duke University with a masterโ€™s in African American Studies, Keith reflects deeply on the Black diasporaโ€™s history and significance. He describes it as a journey marked by profound challenges but also by incredible resilience and inspiration:

โ€œWe were taken from so far, for so long, and to so many places. Our names and customs were systematically removed, but we survived. Thatโ€™s whatโ€™s inspiringโ€”we are still here. Today, still we stand. I am grateful to stand on the shoulders of those who endured, and I carry their strength with me.โ€

Empowering Communities Through Service

Keith Ellis channels that strength into his work, empowering farmers and communities around the world. For him, service is about more than just volunteeringโ€”itโ€™s about building connections and fostering a shared sense of humanity.

โ€œService is what builds communities. It brings people together. My love for my own community inspires me to love and serve all people.โ€

Inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Keith Ellis finds inspiration in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who emphasized the importance of living a life dedicated to helping others:

โ€œTell them not to mention that I have a Nobel Peace Prize, thatโ€™s not important. Iโ€™d like for someone to say that Martin Luther King tried to live his life in service to others. Iโ€™d like for them to know that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody.โ€

These words resonate deeply with Keith:

โ€œLike Dr. King, I try to love somebody. Thatโ€™s why I serve.โ€

A Legacy of Connection and Hope

Keithโ€™s story is one of connection, resilience, and hope. It reminds us that service to others transcends boundaries and brings people together. This Black History Month, Winrock International honors Keith Ellis and the countless individuals whose commitment to service builds stronger communities.
