Ever Wonder Why Our Year Has 12 Months Instead of 13 🤔

Did you know the lunar calendar naturally yields 13 months of 28 days each year? In fact, for over 50 years, Kodak operated using a 13-month calendar designed by Moses Cotsworth, featuring an extra month named Sol between June and July!

So why did the world stick with 12 months?

  • Imperial Influence: Our current 12-month structure stems from ancient Rome, where months were added and renamed after emperors like Julius Caesar and Augustus.
  • The Geneva Turning Point: In 1931, international leaders met at the League of Nations in Geneva to discuss standardizing the 13-month calendar worldwide—only to decide against it.
  • A Curated Order: A 13-month calendar starts every month on a Sunday, meaning every month contains a Friday the 13th. Some suggest shifting away from natural moon cycles was less about practicality and more about establishing centralized control over time, work, and schedules.
